She supported her husband, Johann Sebastian Bach, in all areas of his life and work. Anna Magdalena Bach was a trained musician and composer. At the age of 19, she was a princely singer with the second highest paid position in Köthen. At the age of twenty, she married the widower Johann Sebastian Bach. She copied his works, composed songs, sang and made music. At the same time, she was the mother of 13 children, responsible for the household, the many guests and pupils and Bach's seven children from his first marriage. After Bach's death, she became impoverished, lived on welfare and was buried at a pauper's funeral in 1760. Interestingly, there is not a single portrait of Anna Magdalena and almost no letters.
In an interdisciplinary exhibition, the GEDOK artists cast their own female gaze on Anna Magdalena Bach and also include her husband. They shed light on the (pre)images of women at the time, the forgotten women of the Bach family, bring Bach's artistic contemporaries to our attention or even interpret a possible role reversal.
