Cemeteries are a special cultural asset. In many different ways, they tell of life and death, of faith and hope, of yesterday and today. They are places of mourning and of life. At the Old South Cemetery, you can meet musicians, theatre people and inventors. Inspired by the cantata "Komm, du süße Todesstunde!", they all talk about funeral culture and musical Munich in the time of Johann Sebastian Bach and beyond. Franz Lachner plays a prominent role here. It was under his direction that Bach's "Matthäus-Passion" was performed for the first time in Munich. He laid the foundation for a Bach tradition in Munich that has been upheld by subsequent generations of musicians to this day.
This event is part of the "Bach inspires: Munich rediscovered" series.
