Baroque fashion for today
26.11.2025,
Johann Sebastian Bach's life and work coincided with the transition from High Baroque to Rococo. This was not only a time of great innovation and creative productivity in music, but also in all the liberal and applied arts. This included fashion and its innovations in particular, as demonstrated by the budding bespoke tailors at the German Master School of Fashion.
Supported by an unprecedented mastery and excellence of craftsmanship, fashion in Bach's time, from the courts of the nobility to the salons of the third estate, unfolded a unique fantasy of form, colour and material. The iconic creations of this era range from powerful opulence and playful sophistication to the limits of the decadent and thus remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration to this day.
With this in mind, the budding bespoke tailors at the German Master School of Fashion regularly explore the aesthetic impulses of that era in their collections and project work – less in the sense of historically correct costume design, but rather as stylistic inspiration for relevant contemporary fashion.
The Deutsche Meisterschule für Mode | Designschule München is a centre of excellence for creative training and further education in the fields of communication design and fashion. As an institution of the City of Munich, it offers practical and tuition-free training programmes in the heart of the city. Practice-oriented projects, semester and final theses as well as cooperation with companies and cultural institutions ensure a close connection to professional reality. The training programme combines traditional craftsmanship with creative excellence, deepens technical skills, promotes creative forms of expression and at the same time strengthens the understanding of entrepreneurial contexts.
To mark the Bach Festival, the German Master School of Fashion will be presenting a selection of models and outfits in Halle E at Gasteig HP8 that follow the Baroque sources of inspiration of Bach's time.
