One year after the premiere, J. S. Bach presented his "Johannes-Passion" in a fundamentally revised version on Good Friday 1725 in St Thomas's Church in Leipzig. He deleted entire passages, replaced them with new compositions and fundamentally reorganised the beginning and end of the passion in particular. Instead of the expressive, dissonant opening chorus "Herr, unser Herrscher" from the 1724 version, Bach now opted for a contemplative chorale arrangement: "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß". This new version lent the passion a new tonal and theological depth and invited the audience to reflect even more intensely on the suffering of Christ. Now, this rarely performed second version of the "Johannes-Passion" can be experienced in an impressive performance.
