Weimar was once the home of the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Between 1708 and 1717, the historic chapel in the Weimar City Palace - the so-called ‘Himmelsburg’ - was Bach's main place of work. As court organist, he composed the majority of his ground-breaking organ works here. He composed almost 25 Weimar cantatas, which signalled Bach's breakthrough as the grand master of Lutheran church music. Tragically, Himmelsburg Castle was irretrievably destroyed by fire in 1774.
But this mythical Bach location has been resurrected as a virtual reality experience. The actual journey to ‘Himmelsburg’ begins with VR goggles and headphones. They take the interested audience to Himmelsburg - at first they are still sitting in the container. Then the room slowly dissolves. You suddenly find yourself sitting on a church pew and listening to Bach's cantata ‘Himmelskönig, sei willkommen’ on this virtual journey through time.
