Johann Sebastian Bach’s music transcends centuries and continents – vivid, inspiring, and boundless. This concert celebrates his enduring legacy in Japan. Toshio Hosokawa`s powerful adaptation of Bach`s "Oh Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß" for string quartet finds its lyrical counterpart in Joseph Kosma’s "Autumn Leaves", arranged by Tōru Takemitsu, who seamlessly weaves Japanese sonic aesthetics with Western melodic tradition. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s quartet movements from Op. 81 reflect his deep reverence for Bach, while Caroline Shaw engages in a direct musical dialogue with him in Punctum.
The evening’s highlight is the world premiere of a new work by Christian Elsässer, specially commissioned for Bachfest München.
On this evening, the international festival line-up of the Henschel Quartet makes Bach's music flower – like an echo beneath cherry blossoms.
