The MonteverdiChor München, under the direction of its founder Konrad von Abel, is known for its inspiring concert programmes with a cappella music from all eras. This is also evident in its contribution to the Bachfest 2025, which juxtaposes the chorale motet "Jesu, meine Freude" by Johann Sebastian Bach with English anthems and motets. William Byrd wrote his five-part "Laetentur coeli" in 1580 at the end of the Renaissance. One hundred years later, Henry Purcell, then revered as "Orpheus Britannicus", used expressive chromaticism in "Lord, How Long Wilt Thou Be Angry". Works by such diverse masters as Edward Elgar, William Walton, Benjamin Britten and John Rutter offer an insight into the diversity of English choral music in the 20th century. The 1964 motet "Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing" by Herbert Howells was written in memory of the assassination of John F. Kennedy and expresses also his grief about the early death of his own son.
