Courtly life and a progressive presence of science, including in mathematics and geometry, characterise the Baroque effects in the arts. The sophisticated style of dress was also characterised by great expense, starting with "Sun King" Louis XIV in Versailles.
The men's fashion with its long curly wigs ("allonge"), elaborately decorated justaucorps with waistcoat and breeches and – for the first time – shoes with heels (!) as well as detailed accessories such as neckwear, gloves and handkerchiefs is almost more opulent in appearance than the Baroque lady's manteaux dresses. Both men and women loved a lot of make-up and perfume – also to distract from their lack of hygiene ...
Dorothea Nicolai talks about style and life at the time of Johann Sebastian Bach in her lecture "Allonge and Grand Parure". She will be accompanied by pianist Helena Lüft, a student at the Munich University of Music and Theatre.
Dorothea Nicolai is a costume designer, set designer, author, lecturer and curator. She works internationally at theatres such as the Vienna State Opera, Zurich Opera House, Opera Bastille in Paris and the Salzburg Festival.

SALON LUITPOLD
SALON LUITPOLD has established itself in the best sense of the word as an address for sophisticated dialogue on topics and issues that are timely or deserve more light. The 100 or so seats in the Palmengarten are usually reserved well in advance and the audience is a colourful mix. The increased interest in the analogue exchange of opinions, generations and between disciplines may be a sign of the times – but the urban coffee house has a long history dating back to 1888 and is an ideal location for a festival café in the middle of the city.
