The friends Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) and Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) can be seen as representing two different directions in German Baroque music. The strictly contrapuntal Bach is contrasted with the contemporary and stylistically flexible Telemann and his pleasing melodies. The latter's folkloristic, partly Eastern European influences are illustrated by melodies and dances from the "Uhrovska Collection" of anonymous pieces of Sinti and Roma music from the 18th century.
