The art of variation on keyboard instruments has been extremely popular since the 16th century at the latest. Whether Girolamo Frescobaldi, John Bull, Johann Pachelbel, Antonio de Cabézon or Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck - composers all over Europe created corresponding works, some of them on a considerable scale. Johann Sebastian Bach, however, apart from a few early works and the famous violin chaconne, tended to hold back in the art of variation. However, when he planned the publication of his multi-volume "Clavier-Übung" in the 1730s, in which he wanted to present himself to the music world as a versatile composer of keyboard music, he gave the variation genre a prominent place: As the fourth part and thus the crowning finale of his largest print project, Bach published the "Aria mit verschiedenen Veraenderungen vors Clavicimbel mit 2 Manualen" in 1741, later called the "Goldberg-Variationen" for short.
