The "Bach chorale", as a model for setting Protestant chorale melodies for four-part choir, is still regarded today as an ideal type that is taught as a model in composition lessons and has been the subject of much musicological research.
What are the special characteristics of the "Bach chorale"? Are there models for it? Did Bach's contemporaries compose something similar? What influence did Bach have on posterity? These questions will be explored in the lecture, which is aimed at both music-loving amateurs and experts. The issues will be illustrated not only theoretically, but also by means of music that can be heard.
Dr Jürgen Brandhorst is a musicologist who has devoted himself to researching and performing the church music of Johann Sebastian Bach since his childhood. In addition to his other professional activities, he regularly lectures at music colleges and universities and also works as an organ expert.
