Not least because of the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War and numerous epidemics, the Baroque era is often reduced to the theme of vanitas, in which human existence is seen as vain and futile. But this epoch (from the end of the 16th to the middle of the 18th century) was characterised by an astonishing optimism about knowledge. The Baroque built up a huge cultural wealth of literature, science and art from the wealth of knowledge of the Renaissance, which unfortunately disappeared to the back of the shelves and had to be brought out again.
