Johann Sebastian Bach dedicated his cantata "Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme" to Philipp Nicolai's hymn of the same name. In terms of content, it describes a wedding between the waiting human soul and the approaching Jesus as the bridegroom. Full of longing and sensuality, but also joyful and cheerful, Bach merges heavenly and earthly love.
This is followed by Giacomo Puccini's "Messa di Gloria". Originally written as a "Mass for four voices with orchestra", Puccini composed the work between 1878 and 1880 at the ages of 19 and 21. The mass, in which the choir in particular takes centre stage with its melodic brilliance and grace, was the final work of his music studies in Lucca. It was premièred in July 1880, but remained unnoticed thereafter. It was only rediscovered after Puccini's death and has enjoyed growing popularity ever since.

The Münchner Motettenchor is one of the most renowned and traditional concert choirs in Munich. With performances in major concert halls, it is a permanent fixture in the city's musical life. Since its beginnings, it has also been closely associated with the Protestant Episcopal Church of St Matthew, where it performs at concerts and church services.
