"Jesu, meine Freude"

Double-choir motets from the Bach family and modern poetry
The concert with the MendelssohnChor Munich, the CordAria ensemble and actress Katharina Meinecke will be conducted by Johannes Geyer.

Concert
Evangelische Kirche Zum Guten Hirten

In the middle of the 16th century, polychoral music developed in what was then the musical centre of Venice. Works were created with two or more ensembles that alternately filled the entire church space with sound. The individual choirs absorbed what they heard from each other and continued to play in tutti passages to intensify the sound or as an echo. Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schütz are the best-known composers of this period. Johann Sebastian Bach and his family also wrote double-choir motets.

The two ensembles in this concert are the MendelssohnChor Munich with twenty singers and organ and the instrumental ensemble CordAria with cornett, alto and tenor viola da gamba, cello and theorbo as basso continuo instrument. Recited poetry complements the music as a third element. This creates an interplay between the polyphonic musical structure and the clear, often emotionally condensed language of the poetry.
