Simon Rattle has always had a special fondness for Robert Schumann's poetic and melancholy Romanticism – he made his debut with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra 15 years ago with the rarely performed oratorio "Paradise and the Peri" and has since conducted other Schumann works. Rattle, now Principal Conductor, is now continuing his exploration of Schumann with the BRSO and interpreting his "child of pain", the Second Symphony. Schumann composed this C major symphony as a kind of occupational therapy after a mental breakdown: "I wrote the symphony in December 1845 while still half ill; I feel as if you have to listen to it." The centrepiece of the Second Symphony is an Adagio espressivo in C minor – this otherworldly song of pain documents Schumann's reception of Bach and his deep reverence for the art of the Cantor of St. Thomas. So much so that Rattle and the BRSO have declared their performance a contribution to the 99th Bach Festival.
