When musicological research on Johann Sebastian Bach in 2025 completely changes our understanding of his music and the image we have had of this composer up to now, it is tantamount to a sensation. This is exactly what Meinolf Brüser (Berlin) achieved with his book "Wenn Bach trauert", which was published by Bärenreiter in 2023. His major research work on the Bach motets refutes almost all the theories put forward to date and proves that these are very personal pieces of funeral music that Bach composed for family members, friends or pupils. In other words, these are entirely intimate works that Bach wrote as a form of personal mourning. When you know about these stories, you hear this music with new ears. The discussion concert brings research and music together in one room.

Ensemble BachWerkVokal
In 2015, Gordon Safari founded the ensemble BachWerkVokal Salzburg, which defines its central artistic point of reference in the vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Within a short space of time, BachWerkVokal has developed into a recognised ensemble for historical performance practice in Austria, which now performs internationally. BachWerkVokal organises its own concert series in the Christuskirche Salzburg.
